A Leap of Faith

A Leap of Faith
A Leap of Faith encourages audience members
to explore the tenets of their beliefs in an atmosphere that allows
for mutual respect and human connection. This performance also builds
empathy for all points of view
by offering the unique opportunity for people to “walk in someone
else’s shoes” for a brief moment. This form
of theater values the experiences and insights of the audience as
much as that of the performers and allows for dialogue on a more
emotional level.
With A Leap of Faith we will perform
our original play once through; then we start the play again. This
time
audience members can stop the performance when they see a problem.
The audience member enters the scene and replaces a character they
believe could create a positive solution to the problem. The actors
work with the audience member’s new tactic. Whether an intervention
“succeeds” or not it provides a unique opportunity to rehearse taking
action in complex situations. The facilitator then leads a short
debrief and we continue to the next “intervenable” scene.
The setting of the play: A Leap of Faith
takes place in the spring of 2004 when, for a brief time in Multnomah
County, Oregon, gay couples could marry. The play features a same-
sex couple who want to get married and the effect that has on other
members of their
faith community.
Note: Although A Leap of Faith was developed
for Churches and other faith communities we are able to
modify the play to perform for more secular venues.
